Isn’t Christmas one of the most awaited festivals of this world? Some of the specialities of Christmas are cakes, stews, muffins, cupcakes and gingerbread cookies.

Gingerbread has been brought to Europe by the Armenian monk Gregory of Nicopolis. He left Nicopolis to live in Bondaroy and taught gingerbread baking to French Christians. Then it was brought to Sweden by German immigrants, and from there, it gained fame.

The term gingerbread comes from the Latin word Zingiber which means preserved ginger. In Sweden, it was the custom to bake white biscuits and paint them as window decorations.

Its main ingredients are molasses, ginger, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and honey. The gingerbread Cookies are very tasty and healthy and are a popular choice among kids. It has many health benefits like it cures indigestions and it has many medicinal properties.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup molasses or jaggery + water (melted)
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp gingerbread spice
  • 2 cups refined flour
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp baking soda
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence

  1. In an add molasses and heat it on low flame.
  2. Add sugar and mix until sugar dissolved.
  3. Now add butter and stir till melted and sauce is creamy.
  4. Remove it from the flame and let it cool.
  5. Add gingerbread spice to this warm sauce so that its flavours releases easily. Mix it properly.
  6. Now add refined flour, baking powder and baking soda to it, mix everything well and knead the soft and sticky dough.
  7. Add egg and vanilla essence in the dough and mix, and knead it properly.
  8. Dust your hands with refined flour and smoothen the dough.
  9. Wrap the dough in the plastic wrap and let it sit for 30 minutes in a cool place.
  10. Sprinkle flour on the rolling pin and over the dough.
  11. Roll the dough to a ¼ inch thickness.
  12. Cut out the cookies with a gingerbread cookie cutter and any desired cutter.
  13. Take a baking tray and place butter paper on it, and pre-heat the oven at 170*C.
  14. Place all cookies on the baking tray and space cookies 1 ½ inch apart.
  15. Bake them in a pre-heated oven at 160*C for 7-10 minutes.
  16. Take out the tray from the oven and allow the cookies to cool down.
  17. Decorate the cookies with desired decorations.
