Start Your Breakfast with Gujarat’s Special Methi Thepla

Got bored with regular breakfast? Then try the special Gujarati breakfast dish, Methi ka thepla. It is prepared in every Gujarati house and is a traditional Gujarati breakfast. Thepla is a flatbread made from chickpea flour, spices, and oil dough. It is very soft and tastes delicious and popular among Jains.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh fenugreek leaves, chopped
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • ¼ tsp asafetida
  • 2 tsp oil for greasing

 

For Pickle

  • 5-6 vatwani red chilli, slit
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard seeds
  • 5-6 fresh green chilli, slit
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • ¼ tsp asafetida
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 tbsp oil

 

Method

For Methi Theple

  1. In a strainer, add fenugreek leaves salt and wash them and keep them aside till in use.
  2. Add whole wheat flour, chilli powder, turmeric powder, salt, asafoetida, oil, and fenugreek leaves in a bowl and incorporate it well.
  3. Now add little water occasionally and knead the dough.
  4. Then add some oil and knead it again.
  5. Cover and let it set for 30 minutes.
  6. After that, take a small portion of dough and make a small ball.
  7. Now it with wheat flour and roll it with a rolling pin into a thin disc.
  8. Heat a flat pan and place this thepla disc on Tawa and roast it from both sides.
  9. While roasting, baste some oil on both sides and roast till it turns golden brown.
  10. Make theplas from the remaining dough with the same process.
  11. Meethi thepla is ready to serve.

For Pickle

  1. Add red chilli, green chilli, yellow mustard seeds, turmeric powder, asafetida, salt, lemon juice, and oil in a mixing bowl.
  2. Mix everything well and keep it on the side for further use.
